Prison Break

Prison Break

I have a confession. I’m addicted to Prison Break. It’s one of the best dramas I’ve ever seen, and is currently being shown on TVB Pearl every Tuesday night (10:30).

The story centres around Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), sentenced to death for the murder of the Vice President’s brother. We quickly discover that Lincoln is the fall-guy for a vast political conspiracy and, conveniently, his brother Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) is an architectural designer working at the company that designed the prison. As you would imagine from the title, Michael takes it upon himself to use his knowledge to break his brother out of prison.

The series starts with Michael holding up a bank, being caught, and sentenced to the same prison as his brother, where he has to deal with an assortment of prisoners, prison staff, and surprising events. Running parallel to this is the story of Lincoln’s ex-girlfriend, a lawyer, who realises that Lincoln has been framed and decides to clear his name.

The story is a wonderful mixture of suspense and unpredictable plot twists that is guaranteed to make your heart beat faster and keep you watching week after week. Both the prison and the political outside world are full of memorable characters, many of which you love to hate.

A Change of Life

New Things

People always like new challenges, new ideas, new music, new experiences and new friends. It’s part of our life to make new things happening. It makes us grown up; it makes us long for new experiences tomorrow. It’s the nature in our blood and it’s the things we look forward to living for.

New things enhance your horizon; it opens your eyes; it pulls you out of your own circle; it makes your jump; it makes you feel different and it makes you contribute something to this world. Of course don’t take things for granted, it needs you to make it happen, to make it yours. People are scared of changing or loosing. But we are young. Young people like creating new things; To be personal, I like people changing; I like those always giving surprises and new feeling; I am trying my best to surprise them back as well. I love life to be more colourful, more passionate, more energetic, not only white the black. We only have one life.

Take an example, do you realise the new generation singers on TV always make the same type of music? —boring tune, always sad songs about breaking up with lovers; same music video has a man and the woman chasing each other or posing and making themselves look pretty. I hope new generation singers can use their talent to impress us, not only beauty.

The world is changing; it’s moving; it’s pushing us to walk with it. Daily life is never new at all for us; we wake up, go to work, off to work, eating dinner, watching TV or relaxing at night, then go to sleep; it looks like we are doing machinery job, but this is simple life that everyone experience days and nights. We are repeating the same thing over and over time; it’s true, but if we slightly notice, we know we are contributing things to make this world move faster. The world is moving because we are moving; we are creating new things in our work, in our life, in our technology. This world has what it is because everyone is producing new stuff without noticing.

I will feel bad if I am not learning or create new things in a day; it doesn’t matter that you should make a big change. Could be a new dish, a new idea, or a new look!

Everyday is a new day, a new start, a new life! Let’s have a change of life. Enjoy…

Sebastian Schunke in GZ on October

Sunday
Aug 27,2006

I missed Sebastian Schunke’s Jazz concert last year, which made me feel sorry for myself. However, their manager recently mailed their fans to announce that Sebastian Schunke and his band will be playing again in Guangzhou, as well as,Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Malaysia, in October 2006. This thrilled me. Here is their MySpace website with some of the band’s music, and lots of information.

Due to their successful performances in 2005, this years tour brings together internationally renowned Jazz musicians living in Berlin and New York. They unify the intense energy from their different home cultures to create a complete new song concept in a jazz environment. This is hip experimental world jazz, with musicians from Europe, USA and Cuba - totally new and unpredictable. In the centre is the new vocal star from Cuba - Olvido Ruiz - is member of the new Cubanian generation. This year they present the new songs for the new cd “Seba meets Olvido” exclusively for China and Malaysia.

To all fans who like this new style Jazz music, don’t miss out on this opportunity!

What are your principles? You may not have thought about it so directly. Principles are what you think is right and wrong. They are the rules that guide you. They are what tells you if it’s right to steal, even though no one will ever know. Whether it’s right to cheat, even though no one will ever find out. Whether it’s right to hurt someone just because you can.

Principles are not only for yourself, they are for your family, for your society, and for your country. I’ve read in the news that China’s economy is becoming stronger and that our life is getting better and better, but when people in other countries still think that our products and our reputation is cheap; that we copy everything, make fake products, pirate DVD, then I wonder how much credibility we really have.

I am positive that our country and some people have made tremendous contributions to China. Take Haier and Shanghai Tang as examples. They’ve both become international Chinese brands. China needs more enterprises like these, more to increase not only our economy, but also our standing in the world.

Sometimes I feel bad about the way we are perceived. A lot of the time the problem is one of principles. People like the easy way to make more money; to make their life more enjoyable; to not work so hard like others. Some people think it’s the smart way, and they believe it’s the most efficient way. They lose their principles or faith when they face the temptation.

Principles also affect our everyday life. Do you work hard because you want to succeed, or do you secretly hope that someone will come and rescue you so you don’t need to do anything? What make your life not empty, so that you are not like someone who has lost their faith and just joins the big crowd? Principles can make you not just like toys or animals. They can make you feel like you have a brain and wisdom to think what is right and what is wrong.

To be in this new generation brings with it new responsibilities. We have better education, a more international culture; we have our own thoughts and our own dream to pursue. We can do better than our parents. However, should we focus only on material gains? Is a new car, house, or TV the road to happiness? Our principles may cause us to ask ‘what can I do for my country?’ As well as taking from the country we need to give back to it. We need to ensure that while we grow economically strong it is not at the expense of reputation. Life is not just about taking; it’s also about giving.

I will try and make sure I stick to my principles.

Imogen Heap

Friday
Aug 11,2006

Yesterday I finished watching the last episode of HBO’s Six Feet Under - Everyone’s Waiting. The soundtrack was amazing and I am now trying to find the song ‘Lonely Little Petunia’, by Imogen Heap’s. While looking I discovered she had a MySpace website with some of her music, and lots of information.

Imogen’s first album, I Megaphone, was released in 1998. It took her another seven years to follow up with 2005’s ‘Speak For Yourself‘. The British vocalist was far from idle during the interim, having formed Frou Frou with Guy Sigsworth. I then realised that the song ‘Let Go’ (theme to the movie Garden State) is also by her. Amazing! This album, like Frou Frou’s electronica / pop hybrid, also carries a more sweeping and dynamic singer/songwriter aesthetic and presents Heap’s bold-yet-breathy vocals lounging on a bed of electronic effects. Some songs have been used in the popular series The O.C

Heap is an amazing talented composer, singer, and producer as well. Her music is a beautiful work of art; the songs become more and more addictive the more you play them. Her music makes me think. If I travel on a journey it’s the best CD that to pick. She has a dreamy, light, soft voice, before she blasts you with drums and guitars that slowly turn up the volume. It opens your imagination; it opens your inspiration; it brings your memories - sadness, joyful, bitter of life.

Thanks to Imogen Heap for giving us all these remarkable albums and her contributions to music. “Music can be like perfume,” suggests a Frou Frou. “It’s almost a scent, you know, where the right smell changes an environment and makes life more bearable.” So right.

Keane–Under The Iron Sea

Tuesday
Jun 20,2006

Everyone is excited about Keane’s new album due to their successful last album (Hopes & Fears), which was a big hit. I gave the album Hopes and Fears 4.5 out of 5 as it was a near-perfect album, with every song being immediatley likable. This one I give 4 stars, as it takes longer for you to like certain songs. However, there are still many songs that stand out, with my favourites being:

  • “Nothing in my way”
  • “Crystal ball”
  • “Hamburg song”
  • “Try again”
  • “Broken Toy”
  • “The Frog Prince”

Backstreet Jazz Bar

Saturday
Jun 10,2006

There are only 2 jazz bars in Guangzhou. One is the Blue Note, where my friends band has been performing for several couple years (although they had to perform in the Garden Hotel - everyday I can listen to live jazz music between 6pm – 7 pm). The other one is the Backstreet Jazz Bar, situated in the lovely surroundings of Guangzhou’s Ersha Island. Around the corner is the Xinghai Concert Hall, and at the end of the street is the Pearl River. You can’t be any better situated. And also it’s one of the few areas where you can enjoy a walk in peace.

The bar is a two storey glass building set inside a bamboo forest. A lower ‘Jazz’ floor opens out into a small upstairs restaurant area, and the two are joined together, and with the outside world, by a complicated series of stairs, bridges, and sliding doors. The decor is dark, metallic, and subdued, with lots of glass and mirrors. Look very modern, fancy, and you feel naked, like you are walking in the air. Pretty cool.

The restaurant ostensibly serves Latin-American styled food, although it borders on the generic American Italian. The prices are high and portions are small. Drinks, although available in a wide array of forms, are equally served in small quantities. Ask for a glass of wine and you’ll think yourself the butt of a joke; drink it fast otherwise the meagre serving will evaporate.

The staff are nice and friendly, and some of them are from other countries of Asian who speak English only. The restaurant is focusing on attracting foreign people in Guangzhou so English speaking staff is necessary. The food itself is very tasty.

At around 8.30 a quartet of musicians arrive on the tiny downstairs stage, boasting musicians from Canada, Russia, Brazil, and China. Quite a mix. A smooth talking Geraldo Lucio sings, trying his best to draw the small crowd into the music. Herein lies the main problem with the Backstreet: it’s too big and the crowds are too small. The music is excellent, and Lucio prowls the audience trying to get some feedback, but they are too thin and from a very different cultural background to provide him what he wants.

To cut a long story short, we enjoyed the food and the new jazz band. The band only stay here for 2 months. So if anyone who like jazz and want to experience different music passion, I highly recommend it’s worth to be there and enjoy the music.

Show this month

Backstreet Jazz invited Sebastian Schunke on October 2007 to perform in GZ. Jazz fans, don’t miss this chance

9.10. Guangzhou, BackStreet, Jazz Club, 21.45 -23.45
10.10. Guangzhou, Back Street Jazz Club, 21.45- 23.35

我们周末去那里吃饭听爵士,因为刚在花园认识了新来的一只乐队,所以去捧他们的场,东西很贵,从头盘50块不等,主食150—400不等,当然拉,这样的装修需要差不多的价格的,再说,听说老板希望以高档的餐厅为主;酒水都是55—100一杯不等,所以两个人下来就要差不多500了,说到服务人员,几个是说外籍服务人员,从其他亚洲城市来的,餐厅为了吸引多些外籍人事,所以花了比较多精力在管理里面,服务还不错;亲切和附带笑容;

Max Raabe & Palace Orchestra

Monday
May 22,2006

Last night we went to Xinghai concert to watch Max Raabe & Palace Orchestra . Max Raabe, as lead singer of the group, got his ultra-smooth baritone voice singing German music in a 1930’s style. His ensemble, the Palace Orchestra, includes a gowned violinist. Their performance combined a sense of humor with up-tempo and down-tempo songs, and Raabe’s face always had the mysterious smile when he was singing.

Raabe presented a rainbow of 26 songs, ranging from old soundtracks, jazz songs, and even two Chinese folk songs (”Small River is Running” and “Jasmine Flower”), both of which were performed in Chinese. This surprised the audience and caused a big applause.

We did enjoy this concert. It was a very nice performance, and broke our expectations of it just being traditional jazz. Living in the big city means you have more chances to explore different musical cultures.

Learning Japanese

Thursday
Apr 20,2006

为何强逼学自己不喜欢的东西;
到最后才知道,吃亏的还是自己;
其实换个角度想想,也是一门学问;

可能自己设置太多的条条框框;
有时候机会就这样的失去的;

Infinity is limitless
What is infinity?
Infinity is brave

You need to break the tradition
