YouTube

YouTube Logo

I know it’s a late discovery, but I’ve recently found YouTube and have spent far too much time watching music videos.

Many music fans like me sometimes go to great lengths to find band’s music video online. Before YouTube, your only options were to either hope the band’s website had a few videos, or to try and find it elsewhere (such as on MTV). Most of the time these options were incredibly slow, didn’t work, or were a real nuisance. In YouTube, however, you type your favourite artist and the song and it’s all there. Click on the video, pause it until its all loaded (otherwise it may stutter while it downloads), then play it; the quality of the music video might not perfect, but it’s acceptable and at least it loads fast. You will find various music videos, including the original video as well as live performances.

YouTube also has a lot of home-grown videos, ranging from people recording themselves doing funny things, to students wanting to make a break in the movie world. Google thought enough of YouTube that they paid $4 billion US for it… a staggering amount.

It’s good news for music fans but don’t use it too often – you will become addicted. Enjoy!

Sebastian Schunke in GZ on October

I missed Sebastian Schunke’s Jazz concert last year, which made me feel sorry for myself. However, their manager recently mailed their fans to announce that Sebastian Schunke and his band will be playing again in Guangzhou, as well as,Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Malaysia, in October 2006. This thrilled me. Here is their MySpace website with some of the band’s music, and lots of information.

Due to their successful performances in 2005, this years tour brings together internationally renowned Jazz musicians living in Berlin and New York. They unify the intense energy from their different home cultures to create a complete new song concept in a jazz environment. This is hip experimental world jazz, with musicians from Europe, USA and Cuba – totally new and unpredictable. In the centre is the new vocal star from Cuba – Olvido Ruiz – is member of the new Cubanian generation. This year they present the new songs for the new cd “Seba meets Olvido” exclusively for China and Malaysia.

To all fans who like this new style Jazz music, don’t miss out on this opportunity!

Imogen Heap

Yesterday I finished watching the last episode of HBO’s Six Feet Under – Everyone’s Waiting. The soundtrack was amazing and I am now trying to find the song ‘Lonely Little Petunia’, by Imogen Heap’s. While looking I discovered she had a MySpace website with some of her music, and lots of information.

Imogen’s first album, I Megaphone, was released in 1998. It took her another seven years to follow up with 2005’s ‘Speak For Yourself‘. The British vocalist was far from idle during the interim, having formed Frou Frou with Guy Sigsworth. I then realised that the song ‘Let Go’ (theme to the movie Garden State) is also by her. Amazing! This album, like Frou Frou’s electronica / pop hybrid, also carries a more sweeping and dynamic singer/songwriter aesthetic and presents Heap’s bold-yet-breathy vocals lounging on a bed of electronic effects. Some songs have been used in the popular series The O.C

Heap is an amazing talented composer, singer, and producer as well. Her music is a beautiful work of art; the songs become more and more addictive the more you play them. Her music makes me think. If I travel on a journey it’s the best CD that to pick. She has a dreamy, light, soft voice, before she blasts you with drums and guitars that slowly turn up the volume. It opens your imagination; it opens your inspiration; it brings your memories – sadness, joyful, bitter of life.

Thanks to Imogen Heap for giving us all these remarkable albums and her contributions to music. “Music can be like perfume,” suggests a Frou Frou. “It’s almost a scent, you know, where the right smell changes an environment and makes life more bearable.” So right.

Keane–Under The Iron Sea

Everyone is excited about Keane’s new album due to their successful last album (Hopes & Fears), which was a big hit. I gave the album Hopes and Fears 4.5 out of 5 as it was a near-perfect album, with every song being immediatley likable. This one I give 4 stars, as it takes longer for you to like certain songs. However, there are still many songs that stand out, with my favourites being:

  • “Nothing in my way”
  • “Crystal ball”
  • “Hamburg song”
  • “Try again”
  • “Broken Toy”
  • “The Frog Prince”

Backstreet Jazz Bar

There are only 2 jazz bars in Guangzhou. One is the Blue Note, where my friends band has been performing for several couple years (although they had to perform in the Garden Hotel – everyday I can listen to live jazz music between 6pm – 7 pm). The other one is the Backstreet Jazz Bar, situated in the lovely surroundings of Guangzhou’s Ersha Island. Around the corner is the Xinghai Concert Hall, and at the end of the street is the Pearl River. You can’t be any better situated. And also it’s one of the few areas where you can enjoy a walk in peace.

The bar is a two storey glass building set inside a bamboo forest. A lower ‘Jazz’ floor opens out into a small upstairs restaurant area, and the two are joined together, and with the outside world, by a complicated series of stairs, bridges, and sliding doors. The decor is dark, metallic, and subdued, with lots of glass and mirrors. Look very modern, fancy, and you feel naked, like you are walking in the air. Pretty cool.

The restaurant ostensibly serves Latin-American styled food, although it borders on the generic American Italian. The prices are high and portions are small. Drinks, although available in a wide array of forms, are equally served in small quantities. Ask for a glass of wine and you’ll think yourself the butt of a joke; drink it fast otherwise the meagre serving will evaporate.

The staff are nice and friendly, and some of them are from other countries of Asian who speak English only. The restaurant is focusing on attracting foreign people in Guangzhou so English speaking staff is necessary. The food itself is very tasty.

At around 8.30 a quartet of musicians arrive on the tiny downstairs stage, boasting musicians from Canada, Russia, Brazil, and China. Quite a mix. A smooth talking Geraldo Lucio sings, trying his best to draw the small crowd into the music. Herein lies the main problem with the Backstreet: it’s too big and the crowds are too small. The music is excellent, and Lucio prowls the audience trying to get some feedback, but they are too thin and from a very different cultural background to provide him what he wants.

To cut a long story short, we enjoyed the food and the new jazz band. The band only stay here for 2 months. So if anyone who like jazz and want to experience different music passion, I highly recommend it’s worth to be there and enjoy the music.

Show this month

Backstreet Jazz invited Sebastian Schunke on October 2007 to perform in GZ. Jazz fans, don’t miss this chance

我们周末去那里吃饭听爵士,因为刚在花园认识了新来的一只乐队,所以去捧他们的场,东西很贵,从头盘50块不等,主食150—400不等,当然拉,这样的装修需要差不多的价格的,再说,听说老板希望以高档的餐厅为主;酒水都是55—100一杯不等,所以两个人下来就要差不多500了,说到服务人员,几个是说外籍服务人员,从其他亚洲城市来的,餐厅为了吸引多些外籍人事,所以花了比较多精力在管理里面,服务还不错;亲切和附带笑容;

Max Raabe & Palace Orchestra

Last night we went to Xinghai concert to watch Max Raabe & Palace Orchestra . Max Raabe, as lead singer of the group, got his ultra-smooth baritone voice singing German music in a 1930’s style. His ensemble, the Palace Orchestra, includes a gowned violinist. Their performance combined a sense of humor with up-tempo and down-tempo songs, and Raabe’s face always had the mysterious smile when he was singing.

Raabe presented a rainbow of 26 songs, ranging from old soundtracks, jazz songs, and even two Chinese folk songs (“Small River is Running” and “Jasmine Flower”), both of which were performed in Chinese. This surprised the audience and caused a big applause.

We did enjoy this concert. It was a very nice performance, and broke our expectations of it just being traditional jazz. Living in the big city means you have more chances to explore different musical cultures.

Jason Mraz–Mr. A-Z

When I accidentally heard “Mr. curiosity” from Jason Mraz’s “Mr. A-Z” this album, I loved the song instantly and downloaded it and read the lyrics. It’s the song for someone who still is waiting for being in love; it’s the saddest song of all the album. I was absolutely astounded when I first heard this album. It’s actually the first album I’ve heard by Jason Mraz.

Personally Mr. Curiosity Bella Luna —it’s a classic love romantic song; a little bit Latin dancing. “ Did you get my message?” it’s a nice song I love it as well ; ” Geek in the Pink” I also like it, a little bit hip-pop, a little bit rock; it’s our age’s music and Life is beautiful —very deep meaning of lyrics. These four songs I have to highly recommend to everyone. Actually I love the entire album. Jason Mraz made me very impressed about his “Mr. A-Z” album. All the songs are so awesome and Jason is so young and a very intelligent songwriter. His lyrics give you a new perspective on things. It’s enjoyable to listen. 4 stars from Carmen.

Hagnesta Hill – Kent

Kent is one of Sweden’s most popular rock bands. When my friend Trini sent me the song “Quiet Heart” from Hagnesta Hill, I fell in love with it immediately. I then searched more songs from this album and it reminded me of one I heard last year “The King Is Dead”, from John’s MP3 player. It’s a song with memorable chorus, sweeping melody; I love a lot of electrical guitars and a long foreplay and it is very nice song and is the type of Brit-Pop I like.

When I heard “Quiet Heart” it touched my soul and I dipped myself inside the music; this song jumped from the stereo to my ears with ease. It’s a sad song both intense and moody, light and chipper; and the lyrics are so poignant.

I can’t help but recommend Kent’s Hagnesta Hill.

我记得前年在John 的MP3我听过The king is dead。

Coldplay —Fix You

coldplay

I’ve listened to “Fix You” many, many, times now, and love the lyrics. There are thousands of good songs and music, and I really admire genuine artists who live for music and sacrifice themselves to it. “Fix you” from Coldplay and “Answer” from Sarah McLaclachlan are perfect examples.

A good melody needs good lyrics for a background, and good lyrics needs a good melody to bring them out. Good music needs the right person to appreciate it.

  • Music gives your life more passion
  • Music can calm your nerves
  • Music can cheer you up
  • Music will be there for you
  • Music can be chosen for your mood, age, and location

Coldplay —Fix You

When you try your best but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse……..

Death Cab For Cutie

death cab for cutie

Death Cab For Cutie was formed in the tiny college town of Bellingham, WA. PLANS this album was released in August 15 2005. I listened to this album accidentally on the radio and realized that is was on the TV series ‘The O.C’. Rock music for me is kind of bringing my rebellion out and releases it into music. After listening to the whole album I like it so much because it makes me think about our age, our generation & our life; it gave me inspiration; I can feel the resonance in the music, which produce perfectly for our age.

PlANS concerns itself with the gap that waits in front of us all; aging and eventual death. “All of us in the band are starting to turn a corner and realize our youth is basically over,” say 29-year-old Gibbard. “That’s not a fall by the way side. I am becoming an adult. For me, that means being aware of the slow process of losing people in your life.”

PLANS is a beautiful and mature album from a group that itself is still evolving. Death Cab For Cuties is that rare band that isn’t afraid to tackle the big thought, to wrestle with the complex, never black and white realities of human interaction.

PLANS is the sound of growing up of gaining friends and losing them, of realizing, perhaps of the first time, the weight and consequences of every decision we make, of every heart we touch. It’s an album about growing old that can grow old with us.

I highly recommend it to everyone.

About songs:

On Different Names For The Same Things It’s a song about traveling by yourself in a foreign country and the frustration of being isolated by language; even when you are surrounded by people. The lyrics are very simple and short, but it brings a lot of resonance for frequent travelers.

On Brothers on a Hotel Bed contains a warm and wistful melody and is another reflection on age and aging.

On Soul Meets Body It contains lyrics about death (‘If the darkness takes you, how it takes me too’) in to one of their most romantic love songs.

Every one and every song’s lyrics it’s a theme of life or something that might happen when we are getting old. All the songs I have listened to over and over again and it’s made me think of a lot of life and growing up. The generation of 70th or 80th it’s baby boom generation; It’s a very special generation that we actually got everything we need in physical and need more spiritual to fulfill our life. Allow me to call this generation of a “ Transatlanticism” it’s just exactly like the previous album of Death Cab For Cutie call “Transatlanticism”. If Transatlanticism was an inhale, PLANS is the exhale” said Death Cab member McGerr.
